Laboratory Class II A2 Biological Safety Cabinet

A Biological Safety Cabinet is a ventilated enclosure offering protection to the user, the product and the environment from aerosols arising from the handling of potentially hazardous micro-organisms. The continuous airflow is discharged to the atmosphere via a HEPA filter.

Biosafety cabinets are divided into three classes: I, II and III. Class I provides protection for the user and surrounding environment, but no protection for the sample being manipulated. Class II provides protection for the user, environment and sample, and is divided into four types: A1, A2, B1 and B2. The main differences are their minimum inflow velocities and exhaust systems. Class III, also known as glove boxes, provides maximum protection; the enclosure is gas-tight, and all materials enter and leave through a dunk tank or double-door autoclave. Choice of cabinet therefor depends on level of protection needed for the laboratory worker and the sample of interest.

Product description

A biological safety cabinet (BSC) is a primary engineering control used to protect personnel against biohazardous or infectious agents and to help maintain quality control of the material being worked with as it filters both the inflow and exhaust air.  It is sometimes referred to as a laminar flow or tissue culture hood.

These filtered cabinets are primarily designed to protect against exposure to particulates or aerosols.   A portion of the air in most BSCs is recirculated back into the lab through its exhaust HEPA filter.  This purifies the air of potentially infectious aerosols, animal dander, or both but does not reduce exposure to chemicals.

All procedures should be performed in a manner that reduces the generation of aerosolized material and prevents spills. Operations such as centrifugation, vortexing, sonication, and opening containers of infectious materials whose internal pressure may be different from the ambient pressure are known aerosol-generating procedures.   These procedures should be conducted inside the BSC or additional measures must be available to mitigate the safety concern.

Scope of Application

Biosafety cabinets can be used with any biological agent including bacteria, viruses, viral vectors, fungi, parasites, human/animal tissue and cell lines, and prions. They should not be used with:

  • Large amounts of volatile or toxic chemicals
  • Concentrated flammable chemicals
  • Volatile radionuclides
  • Open flames (for more information see the Policies section below)
